Life, In Spite of Me
by Kristen Jane Anderson
with Tricia Goyer
Reaching out to others who may be hurting or looking for answers, Kristen Anderson shares her story in a refreshing, easy to read and free flowing way that hooks readers immediately. Through the journey of her hurts, suicide attempt, recovery and disappointments along the way, Anderson sheds light on a dark story, finding hope in Christ and a new life. Among chapters are intermittently spaced notes from Kristen to the reader in regards to specific topics such as sucide and what to do to get help if one is in that situation.
I initially chose to read this book because I was curious. Having never heard Kristen's story, I was unaware of the book's true message. Once I got started reading, I had a difficult time putting the book down, finishing it in a matter of two days. This story is a quick read, with short chapters that flow smoothly, walking the reader through Anderson's life from the point right before her suicide attempt to the present, sharing insight and encouragement through her hurts, pain, depression and strggles.
A highly recommended read. Readers from all walks of life and histories will find some nugget of truth and help within this book. Especially recommended for teens or other individuals facing severe depression and thoughts of suicide.

The Dragons of Chiril
The Dragons of Chiril
by Donita K. Paul
A fantasy tale geared toward younger readers in the teen years, this book spins a tale of dragons, a missing artist and a quest.
Usually able to find enjoyment in reading any book, I had an extremely difficult time with this book. Having read other books within the genre and able to enjoy young adult literature, I was terribly disappointed in this book from the start and sadly cannot give much recommendation.
Very slow to start, with confusing terminology and titles that are never defined, I found myself confused as to who characters were. The plot is confusing and I found myself frustrated that I had no idea what was truly going on. After several attempts to read this book, skimming, skipping ahead, re-reading, etc. I finally gave up. This may be a really great book, however I could not get past the confusion and frustration enough to get into the book. After 10 chapters, I was no more hooked than the first page :(

The Scroll
The Scroll
by Grant R. Jeffrey and Alton L. Gansky
The Scroll spins a tale that quickly draws readers in and keeps them constantly guessing page after page. As a team of archaeologists are drawn together to serch for a great treasure, trouble greets them in many manners, threatening both the team as a whole and individuals as they struggle to remain involved while maintaining their personal beliefs. Challenge and growth greet characters around every turn and readers quickly find themselves drawn into the turmoil, eager to see it through to the end.
Jeffrey and Gansky make a great writing team and readers will find their work easy to delve into and hard to put down. I enjoyed the story entirely. The only complaint I have is that the ending seemed a little too vague and left me confused. Possibly intended for a sequel, with the end as it is and as a solo book, I was disappointed a little. Overall, however, I did really enjoy reading the book and would recommend it to history buffs, biblical enthusiasts and casual readers alike. A good read!

40 Ways To Get Closer To God
40 Ways To Get Closer To God
by Jerry MacGregor
For the Christian looking to get a little deeper into their walk with God, this book offers 40 opportunities to stretch and grow while becoming more active in one's faith and reaching out to others. 40 Ways offers 40 different activities designed to stretch and grow the reader while providing practical applications in the form of challenges.
Designed to be a 40 day walk, this book could easily become a weekly study for the individual or for a group. Each chapter is a short 4 or so pages, complete with a story, challenge, scripture and journaling space.
Topics include: serving others, scripture memorization, prayer, scripture reading, and visiting elderly in a nursing home among many others. Designed to force one out of the box a little, there are some challenging chapters that force one to stretch outside of comfort limits, but to the reward of growth. A definite keeper, this book is for the Christian who needs a little shove to get moving, or for those who are wanting some more depth to their walk.
I was provided a copy of this book for review by Bethany House Publishers. I was in no way compensated for my review, nor was I required to write a positive review. All thoughts on this book are my own.

Yeshua's Dog
Yeshua's Dog: A Gospel Love Story
by Barbara Rogers
Yeshua's Dog is a fresh look at many of the stories surrounding Jesus' presence on earth, as found in the New Testament of the Bible. Through short chapters, each containing a single illustration opposite the chapter page, readers follow a forsaken and forgotten dog as it finds it's way into the presence of Jesus and finds love and acceptance there.
Stories of Jesus are told from the dog's point of view and offer a fresh look at many of the stories. It also brings to light the characteristics we humans often exhibit in relation to faith and following and compare them to the childlike faith and trust of a dog. There is much to be learned from this dog and his journey with Jesus.
As a dog lover, I really loved this spin and found the book refreshing. A nice read for animal lovers or not, this book has something to offer for everyone. While I feel the text is most likely geared toward upper elementary and middle school students, it can be enjoyed as a read aloud book for younger children, or as a nice light read for adults as well.

The Donkey's First Christmas
The Donkey's First Christmas
by Susanne T Schroder
This is an adorable book for young children, ages 3-7, and even those younger and older, with something to take away on every level. The book brings a new way of seeing the Christmas story and brings in a different perspective that is fun and engaging for children and adults alike. With many rhymes and a rhythm that flows smoothly, the book is both fun to read and listen to.
Illustrations are soft and inviting. The text is unique and fun. Using vocabulary and ideas familiar to children today, the book offers all sorts of fun and learning as well as opens up room for discussion and more learning. A really adorable book! Most definitely a book that will become a favorite in our home as it is so fun to read.
I received an e-copy of this book for review and enjoyed the opportunity to view it this way. While the book opened up nicely via the link I was given, when I tried to see it on my iPad I found many of the illustrations to be missing either in part or in whole, which distracted greatly from the book. So, for now this book will remain a computer only book, which is a disappointment, but that aside, I was very pleased with this book and highly recommend it.

Love Your Husband, Love Yourself
Love Your Husband, Love Yourself
Jennifer Flanders
While I found the information and ideas to be encouraging and helpful, I had a hard time getting through this book as I found it wordy and the chapters long and difficult to wade through. Sadly, I cannot give it more than 2.5 stars because it was a challenge for me not to put the book down and walk away from it permanently. For it to be effective for me, I need to be engaged, which I was not.
Still, I do recommend it on the basis of the information contained. While definitely written for the more traditional woman who stays home and is devoted to the house and family without other work requirements, all women can glean some bit of information that will help them love their husbands more fully and create a safe and loving marriage environment that is strong and faith based.

Dinner With A Perfect Stranger
Dinner With A Perfect Stranger
by David Gregory
When faced with an invitation to have dinner with Jesus, a doubting and struggling man gives in assuming it to be a big joke. What he finds is nothing short of a miracle, forcing him to face questions, thoughts and challenging ideas that had followed him his whole life.
What a refreshing and intriguing book! I was hooked immediately and curious, engaged up until the end and left wishing for more. Short yet packed with thought provoking ideas and concepts, this book is an instant favorite for me. Chapters are quick and easy reads, yet enough food for thought to keep ones mind going for hours and days after reading.
An excellent book to share with an un-believing or on the fence friend or family member, the book presents many of the argued points in regards to Jesus, Christianity and religion in general in a non-confrontational or preachy manner that still gets across the main points while painting Jesus Christ in an accepting, loving and down to earth manner. Easy to understand even for those un-exposed to the Christian faith, the book opens the door for more conversation as well as explains the foundations of the Christian faith and salvation. A book I would highly recommend everyone read, believer or not, as it introduces a new way to look at presenting Christ as well as plenty of opportunity for self searching and growth.

Out Of A Far Country
Out Of A Far Country
by Christopher Yuan & Angela Yuan
A topic surrounded with debate among the Christian community and the world at large, homosexuality is often a topic of heated discussion and raw feelings and emotions. Being a part of a family where this issue is faced, I was intrigued by the topic of this book and drawn to read it out of curiosity. I am so glad I did!
Out Of A Far Country tells the story of a journey for mother and son from the time Chris Yuan "came out" about being a homosexual up to the present day. This story is thick with deep emotion, turmoil, intriguing story line and honesty like few other books. Through the course of the past years, Yuan shares about the man he became, the struggles and ideas he embraced, the results of the chosen paths and the surprise and encouraging ending that leaves the reader thinking deeply about the world around them. Every other chapter is either by mother or son, following the life of Chris from different perspectives and giving insight to living with a homosexual family member as well as finding love and peace for all members involved.
A definite must read for any Christian family facing the idea of a member who is homosexual, this book does not encourage full acceptance of the lifestyle, but instead shows how one family, with God, overcame great turmoil and came to find peace and love amid the misunderstanding. I was thoroughly encouraged and came away with a new understanding and greater love for my family member. On the top of my list of recommended books for it's complete honesty and personal growth inducing thought.

Jesus, My Father, The CIA, and Me
Jesus, My Father, The CIA, and Me: A Memoir... of Sorts
by Ian Cron
An engaging memoir that keeps readers interest through the pages, memories, stories and lessons. So much more than just a memoir, this book offers a look into the life of a man who straight forwardly shares the hurts, fears, struggles and battles of a life lived with an alcoholic mysterious father, bouncing from well being to near poverty and back. Brutal honesty draws readers to Cron's side as cheer leaders through the book.
Prior to reading this book, I was unsure what I would be finding. Not familiar with Cron's story, I was intrigued by the title. I am so glad I stepped into the adventure his book offers. With a spiritual force backing his story, he leads readers through more darkness than is imaginable, spun with laughter and humor, complete with a faith that finds readers identifying and searching their lives for that faith as well. A good read, quick and light yet deep and fully engaging.

The One Day Way
The One Day Way
by Chantel Hobbs
I chose to read this book as one who does not necessarily need to diet, looking instead at the book as a whole on it's intended audience and effectiveness in approach and reading style as I have friends I would be able to recommend the book to should it pass my test.
Chantel Hobbs approaches the idea of dieting one day at at time, breaking down the often insurmountable task into little pieces. By setting oneself up for daily success, focusing only on the day at hand, not weeks ahead or behind, the dieter can begin to break down old habits and form new, healthier habits to replace them. Spinning in her ten commandments of dieting, Hobbs puts a spiritual spin on the idea of losing weight. She approaches the topic in a serious yet easy to read and non-judgmental way that invites readers to consider this approach and give it a try.
Like most diet books, this book does of course push the ideas of exercise, healthy eating and lifestyle change. It is not a quick fix plan nor is it a guarantee... it is up to the inidividual to make the plan successful for them. After having read the book, I am comfortable in passing it on to friends who are looking for ways to help with their weight struggle. I appreicate the spiritual aspect to this book and feel it an appropriate, well written approach to helping those who wish to change their weight by doing so one day at a time and trusting in God to help.

Daddy Dates
Four Daughters, One Clueless Dad, and His Quest to Win Their Hearts: The Road Map for Any Dad to Raise a Strong and Confident Daughter
by Greg Wright
This is a very fun and engaging book written by the father of four girls, full of funny stories and interest. Through his attempts to connect with his girls and set a Godly example for them, he shares his experiences and encourages other fathers to make similar commitments to do the same with their children. A well written book full of honesty and humor, down to earth, encouraging and challenging for fathers. Full of practical advice and stories easily followed and put into practice.
Setting out to raise confident and successful women-to-be, Wright walks through each stage of life a girl faces, from grade school to pre-teen, puberty, dating, college, etc. In seeking to show his daughters what is is like to be treated with true love and respect by a man who truly loved them, he shares some of the ways he made sure he met his girls at their level and really got to know them. Through his "dating" his daughters, he shares some of the stories and offers suggestions for other dads to step up and do the same. Full of practical "take action" type writing, it is easy to follow and implement.
Geared toward men, this book is easy to read through, engaging and entertaining to read. Women can get their share of information from the chapters as well. My husband absolutely loved the book and has already set out to begin "dating" our infant daughter, implementing ideas and adapting them to fit the lifestyles of a baby, seeking to make this a lifelong venture in which he can invest many positive hours and build a foundation for our daughter. A wonderful Father's Day book or for that new daddy in your life. Very highly recommended! A tool every dad should have!!!

Life Without Limits
Life Without Limits
by Nick Vujicic
This book has something for everyone. From the broken and down-trodden to the secure, there is so much packed into this book. I was initially interested for the sole purpose of disovering more about Nick and reading his story as I had seen a you tube video and was amazed. Little did I know how much this book would offer outside of a good read.
Nick is truly inspirational. The story is written in a very safe and easy to read format, chapters broken down into sub stories so there are easy places to stop mid-chapter and pick up later if one does not have a long time available to read in one sitting. Nick weaves stories of his growing up and struggles with humor, encouragement and common sense to provide an uplifting message that anyone can understand and put to practice. Despite his lack of limbs, Nick has overcome and is able to do so much. Putting his love of public speaking with his inspiring story, he sets out to change the world, reader by reader.
Absolutely at the top of my list of recommended books, this is one I will be passing around to share. Well worth the time as any reader will come away feeling uplifted and encouraged as well as gracious for their own places in life and the gifts they have been given. A fresh perspective that changes how things look.

Barnyard Stories
Barnyard Stories
by Sylvia Price Mueller
A sound idea, this book offers short chapters, roughly 2 pages, each with an individual story that can be connected back to the overall concept of a farm with talking animals. The animals learn lessons, meet friends, have adventures and encounter morals along the way.
There are no illustrations in this book, a detriment, in my opinon. Pages are bland without any creative pictures to accompany the story.
While the stories are imaginitive in nature, they are a bit odd. As an adult, I cannot say what a child would think, but in comparison with other favored and popular children's tall tales, fables and stories involving animals, this book falls way to the bottom. Beyond the silliness, which is welcome in tales such as these, the stories feel forced and beyond enjoyment as they are bland of detail, development and character.
Sadly, not a book I will be keeping around my home, giving or recommending to friends. A 1 our of 5 stars for me at the most.

The Charlatan's Boy
The Charlatan's Boy
by Jonathan Rogers
What a charming and witty book! A young adult novel, The Charlatan's Boy is a book full of hilarity, imagination, inner exploration and discovery. Floyd and young Grady travel town to town selling hoaxes, false ideas and solutions trying to survive, their most favored being the idea of Feechiefolk.. When people stop believing in this hoax, Floyd and Grady are scrambling to survive. They stumble upon a plan to make it big while maintaining their desired line of work, peddling the tale of Feechies. Through encounters with other peddlers, villagers, and other countrymen, their tale spins and web that all become entangled in.
A joy to read for all... Adult and young adult alike, Rogers offers entertainment in a way reminiscent of C.S. Lewis and Mark Twain. This book should become an instant classic!

Thank You, God, for Mommy
Thank You, God, For Mommy
by Amy Parker
illustrated by Frank Endersby
Another really sweet book by Amy Parker. Little Panda finds himself realizing the many things to be thankful for in Mommy... hugs, cuddles, lullabies... She takes care of him, and offers love and guidance. He thanks God for the many wonderful things his Mommy does for him.
A really sweet little board book, fun to explore with your child. The perfect gift for a new Mom for Mother's Day, or for the birth of a new baby. Illustrations are soft pastels, soothing pictures, fun to look at, inviting to the eyes. Words are easy to understand/explain to children. A great read together book!
Highly recommended!

Count Your Blessings
Count Your Blessings
by Susie Moore Hillery
illustrated by Wendy Bouch and Cindy Strosser
Each page of this book contains a number, counting from 1-20, a blessing, and a short poem or sentence about that blessing. Opposing the text is an illustrated page to go along with the reading. Blessings in this book being counted include Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister, Grandparents, pets, food, church and many others. Blessings are short, easy for a child to read and understand. Illustrations go right along with what is being read, making it easy for younger children to see through the picture what is being talked about. The final four pages of the book leave room for the child to write their own blessings, making the story their own.
While sound in idea and a sweet book overall, several assumptions are made in each blessing that is not true for many children reading. Not all children have both parents, have a dad that brings income, have pets, go to church, etc. A little troubling to me was the church blessing page. While this book was written by a former pastor, illustrations depict multiple religious symbols which would be very confusing to a young child.
A $20.00 price tag is on this book... I don't think I would pay more than $5.00. Very simple in form, this paper back is not nearly as catching or memorable as many other children's books available. Not a book I would consider a classic in my house. 1 out of 5 stars for me.

How To Be God's Little Princess
Royal Tips of Manners and Etiquette for Girls
by Sheila Walsh
Finally, a handbook for being a princess! With her witty ways, Sheila Walsh approaches the topic of manners, responsibility, helping, loving God and many other topics important to girls in this fun book. Great for girls aged 7-10, it can easily be adapted for girls as young as 5 and into the teen years. A really fun way to get some answers on growing up topics while keeping the girl mindful of God and her being his daughter, his "princess". Moms will find enjoyment in reading this book as well!
Your little "princess" will enjoy reading or having it read to her. Fun to look at, fun to read, a win win for sure. Included in the book is line art in black and white, accompanied by an interior that is pink and black. Each art piece is connected to a "how to" topic, such as: "how to make the best pink cookies, how to wear a tiara, how to earn money at home, how to care for a royal dog, how to be respectful, how to use good manners, how to help Mom, how to follow Jesus, how to act like a princess when things go terribly wrong, and many more". Along with each topic is a quiz for the girl to answer, checking to see whether one is ready to be a princess or needs more help.

The Band That Played On
The Extraordinary Story of the 8 Musicians Who Went Down with the Titanic
by Steve Turner
A story long overdue. Unlike any other literature available about the Titanic, this book focuses solely on the lives of the 8 men who were a part of the band on the ship the night it sank. With extensive research done into where each lived, grew up, their family lives and histories, the author brings to light who these often celebrated men were.
A little heavy on the history, not so much a story, this book is the Titanic fan's dream. Readable for all interested, but deeper into historical facts than many other books in this line. Easy to read, chapters flow into one another. Full of historical document copies including newspaper clippings, photographs, etc. which add tremendously to the book.
A more in depth read, not something to fly through, but full of enjoyment and inspiration. Readers learn about each of the young men individually and then as a whole their part of the tragic night the Titanic sank and their heroic actions seldom discussed. Highly recommended!

Tandem
Tandem
by Tracey Bateman
Wow! At a time when vampire books are so popluar, enter Tandem, a novel written by Tracey Bateman. A completely different "vampire" book than all of the others on the market, this novel is much more adult, not focused on teen readers or lifestyle. A read so hard to put down I nearly read it cover to cover without interruption.
Quick to pick up on the story line, the reader quickly finds themselves immersed in a small town, surrounded by the past of a few characters, leading up to a breath taking and surprising end as the present day story weaves itself together piece by piece. An easy book to read, an immersing story line that deepens with each page turn, characters that become familiar as a friend and a plot that awakens the mind to a world of curiousity, intrique and mystery. As the plot thickens and the story gets deeper, the reader finds themselves stuck in the story as an observer, even a character, wishing the pages to turn faster so as to discover the final event. Filled with small town life, a little romance, history and lots of drama, sure to be a quick favorite!
Highly recommended to anyone who has read such series as the Twilight novels or other vampire type books as well as to those who have not done so. No need to be a follower or fan, this book tells the story on it's own, without hype or cult following. 5 stars in my book for creativity, uniqueness and intrigue.

A Treasury of Modern Mother Goose Rhymes
A Treasury of Modern Mother Goose Rhymes
by Lillian Rose Jensen
Written by a visually impaired mother and grandmother, presumably of Native American descent as deduced by the back cover description of her home on a reservation in Wisconsin. Whether this is supposed to make the reader like the book more, I am unsure. My props to anyone who writes and has a book published, as it is an accomplishment. I am, however, not so sure this one should have been published for mass readers...
Overall, not impressed with this book. The only color in the book is on the cover. For that matter, the only illustrations in the entire book are on the cover. Not a book that is engaging for children in the least, the only draw to the book is the words, which offers a very small draw if any.
The "modern" nursery rhymes seem to focus on flying around the moon in a space ship or some version of that, mixed in with Mother Goose and many other made up characters. Each page is its own "nursery rhyme", and some only 2 verses long, leaving a very white and empty page behind. The rhymes themselves feel forced, words being placed only because they did rhyme.
A nice effort and a sound idea which could be fun and entertaining, but lacking in illustration, color and general reader interest. Sadly, this book only gets one start out of five from me.

Pink Sequin Holy Bible
Holy Bible, Pink Sequin
by Thomas Nelson
An adorable Bible written in the International Children’s Bible® translation, it is perfect for any little girl, most appropriate for ages 5-12. Written in a transation that is easier for children to understand, this Bible offers an added draw to young girls with its fabric covered front in bright cloth with floral print. Embelished with sequined flowers and hearts that stand out from the rest of the cover, this is sure to be a hit with the little girl in your life.
Enclosed in a sturdy bible box to keep the cover nice, it is easy to wrap up and give as a gift. Within the bible are dedication pages among other little extras.
While adorable in cover, it is still a paper/cardboard cover and prone to bending fairly easily. It may not hold up in the long run with sequined embelishments at risk of falling off. Even so, it is still a very nice bible and one that will likely create discussion between your little girl and those around who admire her new Bible.

Regret Free Parenting
Regret Free Parenting:
Raise Good Kids and Know You're Doing It Right
by Catherine Hickem
A seemingly insurmountable task... raising good children without question of doing it right. Catherine Hickem gives 7 applicable principles in her book to help parents raise their child and know they are doing a good job. Based on the idea that a parent must have a goal and a plan all along, Hickem provides stories and ideas to help. With chapters specifically geared for each major age group and it's challenges, including adolescence, the reader can begin with an infant and use this book for years to come as a reference, guide and encouragement.
A well written and easily read book. Geared mostly toward mothers, the content is mostly intended for women and seemingly more even for those who stay home, although not stated. Fathers can also glean bits of information from this book and use the ideas and principles along with their wives.
A concept that seems overwhelming and homework like at first, Hickem relieves the pressure by encouraging readers that one day at a time with goals and plans in mind make it easier. While the principles seem good, as the book covers an entire childhood, it is difficult to say if they are successful for others as they were for the reader. A good read with plenty of thought filled parenting ideas, but in the end, a book, not a fix it plan.

ABC Sing-a-Long
ABC Sing-a-Long
by Gloria Seymour
Sad to say, this book is a worthless piece of junk. I have never received such a poor representation of literature!
A simple run through of the alphabet with a phrase that rhymes with the last letter stopped at, and poorly rhymed at that. Silly and ridiculous. Example: "DEF I see and elf" What? For being a sing-a-long, there is no indication as to how to "sing" this book, no notes, comparison song, etc. to even give indication as to the tune. How, then, can it be used as an educational tool?
This book is 8 pages long. All pictures are very elementary in design, most likely word art or some simple computer graphic already pre-formed, not illustration or art to be sure. Pictures are black and white - absolutely no color in this book outside of the cover. A paper back, very flimsy and cheaply made. The price tag is $8.00, I would not pay $.10 for this at a garage sale.
Absolutely boring and of no use. Very disappointing since it was written by an educator who specializes in children with special needs. With my own personal background in the same area, I would NEVER use this book with this population, or any other students for that matter. There is no interest, no attention grabbing, no fun... nothing that would help a child with learning difficulties. Extremely disappointing! This book is heading to the trash bin.

God Gave Us The World
God Gave Us The World
by Lisa Tawn Bergren
illustrated by Laura J. Bryant
A sweet little book for elementary aged children, teh story walks a child through the ideas of why God made us all different an why there are so many places to live in the world. It addresses the idea of taking care of the world God has given us as well.
Through a trip, Little Bear and her family discover different kinds of bears, the places they live, and the things they eat. Each differs from Little Bear in some way and she is curious about why there are differences among us. THe concept of creation and discussion of God's love for us and our differences encourages children to appreciate our differences and to make friends with others even though they are not the same.
Themes of responsibility for our planet and acceptance of diffeences in ethnicity are addressed in a non-confrontational way that a child can understand and transfer into their own lives. Illustrations are soft colored and friendly.
The story flows well, but lacks some development in that the illustrations jump from location to location, not really flrowing well with the words of the story. Some pictures depict what is being discussed while others do not seem to fit real well. The story is a bit wordy at times and could be simpler while still getting the point across. Also, a little deep in concept for younger children. While geared toward younger children, older kids will better understand the lessons involved in the story.
Overall, a 3 out of 5 stars for me.

Pujols
Pujols: More Than The Game
by Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth
Most definitely a book for the baseball fan. Pujols is an inspiring story about one of Baseball's most famous names currently. A story of redemption and truth, a true testimony of faith. Chock full of statistics and baseball references, this book is geared toward true fans of Pujols and the game of Baseball, though anyone looking for a good read will find reward in reading this story.
From his disbelief in God as an Atheist to his strong faith and testimony of God's impact on his life, Pujols shares his story all while throwing in the baseball facts and stories. Through his story, he gives glory to God and attributes his success to God's presence in his life. A little tough in the start up for non-statistic driven readers, it does take some time to get into this book. Once past the wealth of statistics and into the book a bit, the story does pick up and becomes very interesting. Overall, a good read, though most definitely more so for the baseball fan who enjoys the daunting statistics.

God Loves Me More Than That
God Loves Me More Than That
by Dandi Daley Mackall
illustrated by David Hohn
What an absolutely adorable book! An instant favorite at our house.
God Loves Me More Than That explores how much, high, wide, big, loud, and soft God's love is for a young child, for all of us. Through cute rhymes and comparisons that are familiar to a child (a cheering crowd, buzzing bee, kitten's sneeze, ...) Mackall introduces children to the many ways we might begin to understand how big and great God's love for us is - much more than we can understand.
Illustrations are realistic in that they feature a young boy in each situation interacting with our familiar world. Cartoonish in that the situations depicted are not always something we can do (ride on a bee). Colors are bright and engaging, fun and whimsical, delightful to look at and offering many ideas to discuss along the way.
The message is sound and easy for a young child to understand. The rhymes and fast moving pace keep even young children, toddlers and babies interested. Great for ages 2-6, adaptable either way. Such a simple message yet so profound and important to the curious little minds who hear and read this book. I absolutely recommend this with my highest ratings to every family!

The ABC's of Being Me
The ABC's of Being Me
by Theresa A. McKeown
Published by Dorrance Publishing
The ABC's of Being Me is a sweet little book that addresses a character trait, emotion or feeling beginning with a specified letter of the alphabet. A is for Appreciate, B is for Beauty... For each letter, the word being discussed is in bold each time it is mentioned. A poem or rhyme goes along with each word, identifying other words, ideas or thoughts that mean the same thing, offering learning of new words while also learning what they mean.
Illustrations are in watercolor format, whimsical and soft, depicting a person for each letter/word depicting in some way what the particular word is. Humor (H) shows a person laughing.
A book for elementary aged children, first grade-fifth, this book is not appropriate for younger children. It is fairly long and involved, requiring deeper thought and understanding.
Overall, while the illustrations are cute and the idea is sound, the rhymes feel contrived to me, as if the author was searching for words to rhyme and filling in gaps with words just because they sounded the same as the previous line. An A for effort, but lacking in interest and feeling forced, the book does not flow very nicely. I cannot say I am particularly thrilled with this book, though not totally disappointed, I can only give it two and a half stars.

The Beginning Reader's Bible
The Beginning Reader's Bible
by Thomas Nelson
Illustrated by Marijke ten Cate
Compiled by Tama Fortner
An impressive Bible geared toward learning readers, The Beginning Reader's Bible is full of great stories, biblical lessons, resources, memory verses, prayers and so much more. A hard covered book with heavy duty pages, brightly colored and full of interesting pictures, characters and creatures. Stories from both the Old and New Testament, some of which include "The Very First Sin", "David and the Great Big Giant", "Jesus is Born" and "The Cross, among many others.
Each story is titled and references where the selection was taken from in the bible. Text is taken from the International Children's Bible®, so they are reading actual bible text.Verses are marked for children to learn and become familiar with how bibles are laid out. Stories take about 6-8 pages, each with words on only about half of one page and the other half and opposite page are open for viewing the picture. Prompt boxes are on opposing pages in a small green box, offering children ways to "Remember God's Word", "Do God's Word" and "Pray God's Word" for each story.
Illustrations are beautiful, engaging and full of life and opportunity to explore. Illustrations for stories such as "The Cross" are not at all frightening, avoiding images that would be upsetting to a child without taking away from the reality of the story. There are so many opportunities for teaching within this bible, I am so impressed with the layout, ease of understanding of wording, pictures and extras. A definite on my list of recommended Bibles for children.

Couples Who Pray
Couples Who Pray: The Most Intimate Act Between A Man and A Woman
by Squire Rushnell and Louise DuArt
Growing up, I often heard the statement, "families who pray together, stay together". How true, then, for couples as well. An intimate act that people often feel uncomfortable doing in front of others, prayer is our main source of communication with God. It has been made into a secret and embarrassing thing that so few are able to share in the presence of others comfortably. How important it is that someone be able to pray with their spouse, their closest friend and partner.
Couples Who Pray addresses the need for couples to be able to do just that - pray, together and without fear of ritual, sounding silly, etc. It is such an intimate act, and one that should be shared between a couple. An act that can draw a couple closer together as they become comfortable going to God together, sharing their deepest hurts, strongest desires and greatest joys. Being able to pray together adds a whole new depth to any marriage as it requires a greater trust as well as a mutual relationship together in Christ.
Assuming the couple shares a relationship with Christ (the essential goal of the book), encouraging those who do not to seek Him out, this book does not set out to "save" marriages so much, but to help grow marriages and offer practical ways to grow closer and possibly repair hurts. A 40 day challenge that has been taken up by many notable celebrity couples, their journeys are shared and offered as encouragement to the reader. Easy to read, light and friendly in approach.Highly recommended for every couple. A wonderful book for the couple just starting out on their marriage journey as well as for those who have been at it for some time and need some challenges.

The Goodness of God
The Goodness of God
by Randy Alcorn
What a thought provoking and mind altering work! Alcorn puts into words some of the biggest questions we as hums ask about why things like evil, natural disasters, and other bad things happen to us. "Why did God let this happen" is a question most every person has asked at one time or another. In his book, Randy Alcorn addresses these questions and many more as they relate to God's goodness in a world full of sin, pain and evil. Through biblical reference as well as cultural events and personal stories, he author addresses a multitude of topics within the realm of God's goodness and it's existence though our human comprehension of events might cause us to believe otherwise.
An appropriate book for someone facing a life struggle or difficulty, this book offers sound explanations and reasons that are biblically based and comfort. A great gift for a friend or loved one (or self) facing troubled times and looking for some peace and understanding.
Well written, easy to read with shorter chapters, one can invest a short time to complete a chapter. Yet, each chapter contains so much information and depth that the individual headings and resulting sections could constitute a reading session themselves. Plenty of room for possibility of a book study, small group or personal growth study. A solid book full of ideas, thoughts and stories that will cause the reader to pause, consider their own lives and their world and begin to see things in a new light. To realize that God is good and ever present in the bad.

This is Your Brain In Love
This Is Your Brain In Love: New Scientific Breakthroughs for a More Passionate and Emotionally Healthy Marriage
by Dr. Earl Henslin
Dr. Henslin uncovers the five types of lovers: Scattered Lover, Over-Focused Lover, Blue Mood Lover, Agitated Lover and the Anxious Lover. For each type, a questionnaire is included to help readers determine where they fall. Henslin then explains each type and some of the whys and hows of this person's brain as it relates to sexuality and spirituality.
Written with humor, the book has it's intriguing portions, filled with interesting facts and ideas, backed by science and research. For those not into scientific reasoning, who just want to understand the basics, this book can be a little over the top with research and cited along with explanations. While it can be an easy read for anyone, even with the extra science and research thrown in, it spoke more to my husband than myself. I got lost in the research, medical references, brain scan pictures and discussions and the general science, only really tuning in to the basics. This book is a bit deeper than the usual self help relationship book out there.
Absolutely written for married couples, Henslin seeks to encourage readers to understand who they are, how they tick, and how they can come together to form an even stronger bond in their marriage. For the couples into the hows and whys, this book may be for you. For the readers and couples into the help and practice, a little less so.

The Shelter of God's Promises
The Shelter of God's Promises
by Sheila Walsh
In this beautifully flowing book, Sheila Walsh paints a picture of God's unfailing, un-ending, unconditional love for us through her words, thoughts, anecdotes, stories, biblical references and scholarly quotes. Each chapter is broken down into short sections all contributing and flowing into the overall thought for the chapter, such as Promises. Well written and easy to read, whether in a complete chapter all at once, or in short sections throughout the day or even week, this book offers a lot of food for thought and contemplation.
Offering insight on ten different topics under the umbrella of God's promises and the shelter and protection they provide, Walsh offers hope, joy, learning and confidence in walking daily with Christ. I found this book difficult to put down and also found myself really reflecting upon my own life in terms of each of the ten topics, finding times where each promise was indeed visible in my experiences. Written in a way that softly and gently reminds one of God's love and promises through some of life's most difficult times, the author brings in bible characters and their stories of struggle to illustrate His timeless promises.
I would consider this book worthy of a small group study material as well as individual reading and reflection. Well worth the read, you'll find yourself at peace and understanding a little more deeply Christ's love for his children.
